Drama
Years 7-9
At Key Stage 3, Drama is designed to build confidence, dramatic competence and cultural capital through a wide range of practical and creative experiences. In Year 7, students develop the core skills that form the foundation for further study, learning how to create, perform and evaluate drama through a variety of styles, genres and theatrical traditions. Students explore characterisation, movement, voice, improvisation and ensemble work, while being introduced to significant moments in theatre history and the many creative careers available within the performing arts industry. Throughout the curriculum, key drama vocabulary is explicitly taught and regularly revisited, helping students develop the confidence to discuss, analyse and evaluate their own work and that of others. Our curriculum encourages all students to participate, challenging those with previous experience while supporting those who are new to drama.
In Years 8 and 9, students build on these foundations through more sustained performance work, deeper character development and increasing independence in rehearsal and creative decision-making. Students explore scripted and devised theatre, storytelling for performance, contextual theatre styles and the study of a full play text, including Blood Brothers. Opportunities such as LAMDA Group Storytelling enable students to refine their vocal, physical and ensemble performance skills while developing a greater understanding of audience impact and theatrical intention. Across all three years, students are encouraged to become thoughtful, reflective performers who understand not only how drama is created, but also why theatre has remained an important form of communication and storytelling across cultures and throughout history. By the end of Key Stage 3, students have developed the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to make an informed choice about continuing their studies at GCSE Drama, where they can further develop their creativity, performance and analytical skills.
Beyond the classroom, students have a wealth of opportunities to become involved in the performing arts. Lunchtime and after-school drama clubs run throughout the year and are open to all students, providing opportunities to develop performance skills, rehearse for school productions and take part in a variety of creative projects. We also offer a popular dance club, welcoming students of all abilities who wish to explore choreography, performance and movement. These extracurricular opportunities allow students to develop confidence, teamwork, leadership and resilience while becoming part of our vibrant and supportive performing arts community.
